A review of Paraiba tourmaline 2011.

Gem Research Japan: Chihiro Fukuda, Hidemasa Tajima, Tomohiko Miyazaki

Last year, copper bearing liddicoatite are discovered, and has been revived to discuss about definition of 'Paraiba tourmaline' in world wide.
The measurement data of chemical composition using EDXRF show high Ca content and low Na content. Its belong to liddicoatite and the first occurrence of copper bearing tourmaline except elbaite tourmaline. After careful discussion in LMHC and AGL(Japan), this tourmaline is going to belong to one of the species of 'Paraiba tourmaline'.
This review summarize the characteristics of Paraiba tourmaline that the differences of appearances and chemical composition between major locality, and introduce the characteristics of chemical composition about major and trace elements.
Latter half of the 1980th, copper bearing tourmaline is discovered from 'Mina da Batalha,Sao Jose da Batalha,Paraiba state,Brazil' for the first time.
Definition of 'Paraiba tourmaline' is both of copper and manganese bearing blue to green elbaite, because of the tourmaline from this locality is belong to elbaite. Copper bearing blue tourmaline from this locality contain range from 2 to 2.9wt% total copper as CuO, using our EDXRF(JEOL JSX3600M).
Latter half of the 1990th, two mining districts in Lio Grande do Norte are produced a lot of 'Paraiba tourmaline', and become to major producer of 'Paraiba tourmaline'. One is Mulung mine, its contain 0.6 to 1.8wt% total copper as CuO. Another is Alto dos Quintos mine, its contain 0.5 to 4.9wt% total copper as
After in the 2000th, copper bearing blue tourmaline is discovered from Nigeria, it can divide into two types as follows: One is characterized by Low copper content, and presence of lead(Type2). Another is similar to Brazil's stone, It is difficult to identify the origin only EDXRF analysis(Type1).
The middle of 2005, copper bearing tourmaline is discovered from Alto Lingonha Mozambique. Its characterized by Low copper content(0.2 to 0.9wt% total Cu as CuO), and the body color are abundant of pale color.
Recently, copper bearing liddicoatite is discovered, and characterized by contain both of copper(0.2 to 0.6wt% total Cu as CuO) and lead(0.1 to0.2wt% total Pb as PbO).
